3d foodprinting what is it and what do we get out of it. 3D food printing stands for self-printing of food, using a 3D printer. It may not sound like science fiction anymore, but actually printing our own (healthy) diet seems to be closer than many people think. TNO gave a demonstration during the Food Inspiration Days at the end of 2012, just like during the Gastronomy fair that year. The developments are following each other very quickly, so that we will encounter 3D food printing more and more often in the coming time.

Printer with multiple print heads

The 3D printer has shown quite a development. Previously, it was only possible to print a 3D model using a single type of material, in combination with printing technology or lasers. Today’s 3D printers can handle different types of material by using multiple print heads. This makes it interesting to think about 3D food printing, where we use different types of material or nutrients. In addition, there are applications in the field of lighting, electronics and solar cells, so 3D food printing seems to be just one of the visions of the future.

Sustainable and innovative solution| 3d foodprinting what is it and what do we get out of it

Both TNO and other research agencies and developers want to use 3D food printing to find a sustainable and innovative solution, with which we can meet the demand for (healthy) food. By bringing different disciplines together, it is possible to use the 3D printer in a very valuable way. 3D food printing shows that we can deal with food in a very creative way, which completely discards the traditional ideas about this and takes a completely different path.

Benefit of 3D food printing

3D food printing brings a number of important benefits. For example, it can help us to make the most of alternative ingredients such as proteins from algae and insects. In addition, we can provide a more personalized diet, allowing us to get exactly the nutrients that fit our taste and preferences. Of course, the 3D printer can also make sure that the dish is ready for you, the moment you get home. Finally, 3D food printing can help us take the design of food to the next level. This is not directly the most valuable application when looking at the nutritional value, but will make a large number of cooks run the water in the mouth.
